A Discussion on Zen Buddhism

Join us at USO Osan as Dr. Frank Concilus from University of Maryland, Global Campus leads a discussion on Zen Buddhism.

Various types of Buddhism were transmitted from China to Korea during the late 7th or early 8th century. Zen Buddhism (called Chan in China, Seon in Korea, and Zen in Japan) eventually became very influential in Korean Buddhism and, in some respects, has been accepted as the predominate form of Buddhism. For example, the patriarchs of the main Chogye Order of Korean Buddhism are invariably selected from the ranks of the prominent meditation monks. In this short talk, we will look at the historical development of Zen in East Asia, explore the forms of Zen practice, and examine the main characteristics of this type of meditation.
